If your home is anything like mine, you are endlessly searching for more storage for toys, craft materials, books, and games.
I discovered and simple and budget friendly method to produce more storage along with a big desk surface for my kids to appreciate. I am not the handiest person around so this no-tools project was just my speed!
Materials:
Two big kitchen area cabinets
One long piece of plywood - the width of the board should be a couple of inches more than the depth of your cabinets and the length ought to be the width of the two cabinets combined plus sufficient space for 2 chairs or barstools in the middle (possibly another lawn and a half).
Guidelines:
I began by visiting our regional Habitat for Humanity Restore, where I was lucky sufficient to discover 2 matching high-end maple kitchen area cabinets that had minor flaws. These were brand-new cabinets of outstanding quality for a portion of the cost found at a home improvement store. Although they are taller than a regular desk, I decided to utilize them with barstools, considering that barstools are a lot more "enjoyable" in my kids' eyes than regular old chairs anyhow!
After finding the cabinets, I went to the local house enhancement shop and had them cut a good sheet of wood to my specs. I desired a space between the two cabinets for the barstools so I had them cut the wood the depth of my cabinets (plus a few inches overhang).
In the house, we put some felt pads on the bottom of the cabinets to protect the wood floors and spaced them out along a big wall with enough room between them for 2 barstools to be pressed in. So, basically, the set-up is: cabinet - empty space - cabinet. We placed the piece of wood on top of the 2 cabinets as a desktop. You might nail or screw this wood onto the cabinets for additional stability.
We located 2 maple barstools for $35 each at a local furnishings outlet store which was it!
I had initially considered painting, staining, or sealing the desktop to protect it, but then I reassessed. Why not just let the kids paint and draw easily and not worry about the $40 desktop? The paint splashes and doodling include a fun, creative touch to the room and we can always purchase a new piece of wood to replace it if it gets too unpleasant.
We hung a shelf (simply a piece of wood and some brackets screwed into the studs) above the desk that is the length of the whole system and holds at least a hundred books!
gutter cleaning hose attachment There you have it. If you do the bonus) easy desk/storage system for your playroom or even for a house workplace or garage, a no-tools (or possibly simply a screwdriver and a level. Cooking area cabinets provide a lot of storage, including drawers for smaller sized items, and the huge desk surface is really useful for art projects, play-doh sessions, and homework!
Keep in mind to check for seconds and clearance products to keep this task budget friendly! The Habitat for Humanity shops and comparable stores are an excellent location to start your search for decently-priced cabinets and barstools can be found on sale at the majority of furniture outlets.
